Neighborhood group will help fund station for Brightline commuter operation
Business leaders in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood have agreed to help fund a new station that would be part of the proposed commuter rail operation on Brightline’s Miami-West Palm Beach route. The Miami Herald reports the Wynwood Business Improvement District said it has agreed in principle to help with the $2 million project at Northeast 27th Street between North Miami Avenue and Northeast 2nd Avenue. Brightline and Miami-Dade County are still in discussions over the possible 14-mile operation between Miami and Aventura, Fla. LA Metro awards contract for Sepulveda corridor project
LA Metro has awarded a $48.3 million contract for environmental and engineering studies for the Sepulveda Transit Corridor project, which would connect the San Fernando Valley with L.A.’s Westside. The Press-Telegram reports the 50-month contract was awarded to HNTB, Terry A. Hayes Associates, and AECOM Technical Services to process existing Metro concepts, as well as some recently submitted by private industry, for the proposed 13-mile line connecting a Metrolink commuter rail station in Van Nuys to the light rail Expo Line, and eventually to LA International Airport. Current Metro proposals call for a heavy-rail subway or monorail [see “LA Metro considers options for Sepulveda corridor,” Trains News Wire, Nov. 8, 2019].
National Steel Car gets CN hopper contract
Canadian National has awarded the contract to build 1,150 new high-capacity grain hoppers to National Steel Car Ltd. of Hamilton, Ont. The contract will fulfill plans the railroad announced in July [see “Digest: VRE to add additional round trip …,” July 22, 2020]. “The purchase of new railcars will encourage economic recovery, and help CN continue to meet the growing needs of grain farmers and grain customers across Canada,” Canadian National CEO JJ Ruest said in a press release.
